Botanical vs. Synthetic Skincare: Why Slow Infusions Matter for Sensitive Skin

Why slow botanical infusions tend to suit eczema-prone and sensitive skin better than synthetic fragrances and harsh detergents.

Most mainstream skincare relies on synthetic fragrance blends, sulphate detergents and preservative systems engineered for long shelf life. They do their job, but the same compounds that make a product foam, smell and last are often the ones that flare eczema, rosacea and reactive skin. Botanical infusions take the opposite route. We steep whole herbs โ€” calendula, nettle, frankincense, black seed โ€” into cold-pressed oils for weeks. The oil draws out fat-soluble compounds slowly, at room temperature, without solvents. What ends up in the bottle is the plant's character, intact: anti-inflammatory carotenoids from calendula, soothing mucilage from nettle, the warm resinous notes of frankincense. For sensitive and eczema-prone skin, three things matter. First, no synthetic fragrance: the scent comes from the herbs themselves, so there is no isolated allergen load. Second, no harsh detergents: our soaps are saponified by hand from infused oils, leaving the natural glycerin in place. Third, short, readable ingredient lists: every input is a recognisable plant or fat, which makes patch-testing and elimination straightforward. Slow infusions are not a marketing flourish. They are simply the gentlest way we know to put a plant into a jar โ€” and for skin that reacts to almost everything, gentle is the whole point.
